Dr. Sonia Lorena Arriaga García is a Senior Researcher and Head of the Environmental Sciences Department at the Instituto Potosino de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (IPICYT), Mexico. She earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa under the supervision of Prof. Sergio Revah Moiseev. Throughout her career, she has strengthened her international experience through research stays at Lund University (Sweden), Aalborg University (Denmark), and the University of Galway (Ireland).
Dr. Arriaga is a Level 3 member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNII) and a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. Her research interests lie in environmental biotechnology, with a particular focus on the treatment and valorization of gaseous emissions through biofilters, advanced oxidation processes, hybrid physicochemical-biological systems, and methanotroph–microalgae co-cultures. In recent years, she has also explored the use of magnetic field stimulation to enhance biological processes involved in the valorization of emissions.
Over the past two decades, she has led numerous national and international research projects and established collaborations with leading institutions in Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, and the United States. She has authored more than 75 peer-reviewed publications, holds two patents, and has supervised numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. In recognition of her scientific contributions, she received the Potosino Award for Science, Technology and Innovation in 2019. She currently serves as Associate Editor of Reviews in Environmental Science and Bio/Technology and remains committed to developing innovative and sustainable technologies that address environmental challenges and promote resource recovery and the circular economy.
