GRAEF ZIEHL, FEDERICO

Born in 1956 in Acapulco, México, obtained his B.S. in Physics from the National Autonomus University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1981 and his Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Hawaii in 1990. He then joined the Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada, BC (CICESE) as a full-time researcher in the Department of Physical Oceanography. He has published 20+ refereed articles in international journals, with more than 350 citations; plus another dozen publications. He has been PI of several research projects, as well as the legal person in charge of two megaprojects and of strategic projects of CICESE. He has taught over 20 courses and supervised 6 thesis at the undergraduate, master’s and doctorate levels. He has been a speaker, invited lecturer and commentator at 60+ scientific and academic meetings and congresses, both national and international. He belongs to the National System of Researchers (SNI), level I.

Professionally, Dr. Graef has held various high-level positions: General Director (2005-2015) and Director of Postgraduate Studies (1997-2001 & 2004-2005) of CICESE; and Deputy Director of Regional Development (2016-2018), Director of Postgraduate Strengthening (2001-2004) and Director of Strategic Projects (2004) of the National Council for Science and Technology of Mexico (CONACYT). He has been a member of the Governing Boards of several public research centers of CONACYT; member of the Board of Directors of the Polytechnic University of Baja California (UPBC); member of the State Council of Science and Technology of Baja California; recipient of the Watumull Merit Scholarship, Oceanography, University of Hawaii and member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Hawaii Chapter.

He enjoys mathematics, reading, practicing aquatic sports and watching football.
