Jaime García-Mena is Director of Research and Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Environmental Genomics, Departamento de Genética y Biología Molecular at the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN (Cinvestav).
He received his B. Sc. with a major in Microbiology in 1986 from the “Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas del IPN” in Mexico City, and in 1992 he obtained his Ph. D. in Molecular Biology, from the “Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN”. In 1993 he made a research stay at the “Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique” in Paris, France with Dr. Claude Portier, and from 1994 to 1997 he received postdoctoral training at the “Department of Microbiology, University of Connecticut Health Center”, Farmington USA with Dr. Asis K. Das. He joined Cinvestav-IPN in Mexico City, as a Faculty member back in 1997.
In 1992, he received the “Wood-Whelan Research Fellowship Award” from the International Union of Biochemistry to work in Paris; and in 2004, he received the “International Exchange Programme Award for Young Scientists” to visit the University of Cambridge granted by the British Council in Mexico City. In 2010, he was granted a Nature Publishing Group Travel Award to attend The Biology of Post-transcriptional Gene Regulation Gordon Research Conference 2010 in Newport Rhode Island, and in 2012, he shared the third place of the CANIFARMA 2012 award on Clinic Research for their work on “The association of the intestinal microbiota with the butyrate levels in Mexican children population.”
He develops collaborative work on environmental genomics, in research projects dealing with the typification of microbial diversity in environmental, biotechnological, and human-disease systems; making the profiling of expression levels of genes associated with Type 2 Diabetes and obesity in Mexican population; and the dynamics of functional protein complexes that regulate gene expression in bacteria.
García-Mena is a Mexican National Researcher (SNI III). Jaime García-Mena. email: jgmena@cinvestav.mx
