ELIZONDO QUIROGA, DARWIN EDUARDO

Dr. Darwin Elizondo has 20 years of experience in the fields of Virology and Medical Entomology in the field of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases (Dengue, West Nile Virus, Pandemic Influenza, Rickettsiosis, Chikungunya, Zika, Sars-CoV-2). In 2001, he began work on a project in collaboration with Colorado State University and supported by the CDC and NIH; this project was related to the epidemiological surveillance of WNV in northeastern Mexico. From 2001 to 2006, he worked on surveillance of this viruses while searching for seropositive birds in the states of Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Coahuila.

Dr. Elizondo was a research fellow in arbovirology at University of Texas Medical Branch (2004-2005). He was an associate researcher at Colorado State University (2007-2009), Projects: Dengue Decision Support System and Casa Segura, both programs implemented in the city of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Yucatan. He has been working as a Senior C researcher at a Public Research Center in Mexico (CIATEJ) since 2009, leading projects on three main topics: search for compounds with antiviral activity, development of diagnostic methods, and development of vaccines. During this time, he has directed 12 projects in these areas and and equal number of services, including the development of diagnostic methods for vector-borne viruses such as dengue, zika and chikungunya; Projects related to the search for new antiviral compounds or molecules against arboviruses and other viruses; and also, in the development of a vaccine against influenza. His main research interest is in epidemiology, the pathogenesis of vector-borne diseases, and epidemic and zoonotic viral diseases.
