Arturo Tena Colunga was born in Mexico City in 1963, currently is a researcher and professor at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana at Azcapotzalco Campus (UAM-A), with a prominent career of more than 30 years in the areas of structural and earthquake engineering. He received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in 1986 and obtained his MSc. (1989) and Ph.D. (1992) in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
In 1987 he worked in the seismic evaluation and retrofit of buildings damaged during the September 19, 1985 earthquake for the Mexican Engineering Firm ISTME of ICA Consortium. In 1992 he worked as the Coordinator of the Structural Research Program for the Center of Seismic Research of Fundación Javier Barros Sierra in Mexico City. Since October 1998 he is a Research Professor at UAM-A, where he was the Coordinator for the Structural Graduate Program. He was distinguished with the Teaching Excellence Award of UAM-A in 2010. He has directed more than 60 theses (undergraduate and graduate). Arturo has been guest speaker or professor from technical societies and universities of Mexico, Europe, North, Central and South America.
He is member of the National System of Researchers of Mexico (SNI) since June 1993. He has authored and coauthored close to 400 technical publications. Some of Arturo´s publications have deserved international and national awards, among them: EERI´s Student Paper Competition (1992) and Miguel A. Urquijo (2002), Javier Barros Sierra (2008) and José A. Cuevas (2015) awards from Colegio de Ingenieros Civiles de México (CICM).
He was editor of the journal Revista de Ingeniería Sísmica (1997 to 2007). He is an active member of the Editorial Boards of several indexed journals published in English and Spanish.
He served as member of the Committee for the Masonry Guidelines of Mexico’s Federal District Code since June 1999 to December 2017. He is an active member of the Committee for the Seismic Design Guidelines for Building Structures for the new Manual of Civil Works since 2007 and he developed the Base Isolation Guidelines of the Manual of Civil Works (2007 to date).
He is an active member of several international and Mexican professional organizations, among them, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Anti-Seismic Systems International Society (Assisi) and Sociedad Mexicana de Ingeniería Sísmica (SMIS, where he is past president). He was elected member of the Mexican Academy of Engineering (now Academia de Ingeniería, AI) since November 2000.
