Dr. López-Juárez earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1991, followed by a master’s degree in Instrument Design and Application from the Institute of Science and Technology at the University of Manchester (UMIST) in 1996, and a Ph.D. in Intelligent Robotics from Nottingham Trent University in 2000, both in the United Kingdom. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Foundational Models, electronic instrumentation, self-adaptive industrial robots, neural networks, and computer vision.
He has authored over 200 scientific articles, 13 book chapters, and has supervised 13 doctoral dissertations, 23 master’s theses, and 8 undergraduate projects. He holds two patents and has led numerous technology and technology transfer projects in collaboration with industry. Internationally, he has served as co–principal investigator on projects with the United States and Germany.
Dr. López-Juárez is a Level II member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNI) and a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC). He founded and led the Mechatronics and Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Research Group at CIATEQ, Advanced Technology Center A.C. (2000–2006) and established the Robotic Welding Laboratory at COMIMSA during a postdoctoral stay (2008–2010). His visiting appointments include the National Centre for Food Engineering (NCEFE) at Sheffield Hallam University, UK (2015–2016); École Centrale de Lille, France (2019 and 2022); and the Faculty of Engineering at the Autonomous University of Yucatán, Mexico (2024–2025).
From 2016 to 2018, he served as Academic Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Systems at Cinvestav. Since 2006, he has been Principal Investigator and head of the Intelligent Manufacturing Laboratory at CINVESTAV, where he continues to lead research activities.
In addition to his research, Dr. López-Juárez is an active peer reviewer for leading journals in his field. He has been Guest Editor of the Transactions on Intelligent Welding Manufacturing (Springer), a member of the Editorial Committee of IEEE Latin America Transactions, and currently serves on the Editorial Board of Discover Robotics and Discover Applied Sciences (Springer).
