VELASCO TAPIA, FERNANDO

Dr. Velasco-Tapia is a lecturer and researcher in the Earth Science School at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL), where he has been faculty member since 1989. He completed his Ph.D. in Geochemistry at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM, 2001) and his previous studies (M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry, 1996, and B.Sc. in Chemistry, 1990) at UANL. His research interests lie in the areas of analytical geochemistry and igneous petrology. In recent years, he has focused on the application of diverse statistical tools to solve geochemical problems. He has collaborated actively with researchers in Earth Sciences and other disciplines. He has carried out research stays at UNAM and Centro de Investigación y de Educación Superior de Ensenada (Mexico), Aberdeen University (United Kingdom), Universidad Complutense (Spain), and Universidad de Pinar del Río (Cuba). He has published thirty three journal papers and book chapters (twenty four of them in SCI journals). He has directed nearly thirty B.Sc. and M.Sc. theses; his students have taken positions in international companies (PEMEX, Dal-Tile, First Majestic – Silver Corp., etc.) or academic institutions (UANL, CICESE, and Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí). Dr. Velasco-Tapia has served on several evaluation committees of the Mexican Science and Technology National Council. He received two of the national top awards given to Mexican scholars in natural science: (a) the National Award in Electrical Research (1989), in recognition of his research work in the ionic conductivity of lithium gallium silicates; and (b) the Antonio Caso Medal – UNAM (2002), for his contributions related to calibration methods in analytical geochemistry and about the Central Mexican Volcanic Belt. Also, he was recognized with the UANL Research Prize (2002). For the period 2018-2021, he has recognized as National Researcher Level II by the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología. Since 2005, Dr. Velasco-Tapia is member of the Mexican Academy of Science (Earth Sciences Section).
