Gonzalo Urcid received his Bachelor degree in Electronics & Communications Engineering (1982) and his Masters degree in Computer Science & Information Systems (1985) both from the University of the Americas in Puebla city (UDLAP), Mexico, and his Ph.D. (1999) in Optical Sciences from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE) in Tonantzintla, Mexico. He was an assistant professor in mathematics at UDLAP from 1982 to 1985 after which he worked as an associate professor of mathematics and computer engineering also at UDLAP from 1985 to 1991. He was the leading computer programmer for the international project RTAC II (Regional Technical AID Center) designed and supported by the USA Agency for International Development (AID) from 1987 to 1992 in selected countries of Central and South-America. During the years 1993 to 1997 he worked as a mathematics and computer engineering lecturer at the Ibero-American University in Puebla city. From july 2001 to may 2002 he held a postdoctoral research position as invited faculty of the CISE (Computer & Information Science and Engineering) Department at the University of Florida under the mentorship of Professor Gerhard X Ritter. Since 2001 he is a National Researcher of the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology (SNII-CONAHCYT in Mexico City), and currently is a full professor in the Optics Department at INAOE. His research interests include digital image processing and analysis of multispectral images, artificial neural networks based on lattice algebra (associative memories and perceptrons), pattern classification of multivariate data, and applied mathematics.
