Carlos Luna Criado holds a PhD in Physics with a specialization in Condensed Matter Physics (2005) and a degree in Physical Sciences with a specialization in Theoretical Physics (2000), both from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. Following his doctorate, he completed a postdoctoral stay at the Molecular Magnetism Laboratory of the University of Florence, Italy.
Since 2007, he has been a full-time professor and researcher at the Facultad de Ciencias Físico Matemáticas at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), Mexico. Currently, he coordinates the Graduate Program in Industrial Physical Engineering at the Center for Research in Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CICFiM).
Dr. Luna Criado is a Level III member of the National System of Researchers (SNII) of Mexico and holds a desirable PRODEP profile. He leads the Consolidated Academic Group "Physics of Low-Dimensional Systems and Their Applications" (UANL-CA-305) and directs the laboratory of the same name at CICFiM, focusing on the study and application of physical phenomena in low-dimensional materials.
Throughout his career, Dr. Luna Criado has published more than 80 articles in indexed journals with more than 2,500 citations and contributed to 4 book chapters. His work in technological innovation has led to 14 developments and 12 granted patents. He has supervised 8 completed postgraduate theses and currently oversees 5 more in progress, along with mentoring 4 postdoctoral researchers.
Dr. Luna Criado has participated in more than 30 funded scientific projects, leading 22 of them, and has presented over 100 papers at international conferences. His contributions have earned him the UANL Research Award in Exact Sciences twice (2013, 2016) and the UANL Invention Award in six editions (2014, 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022). Also, he is Guest Editor of Discover Nano (Springer Nature) for the Topical Collection “Nanoscale Quantum and Topological Materials: Spintronics, Magnetism, and Quantum Devices”. The journal has a 2025 Impact Factor of 6.7 and is indexed in JCR SCIE (Q2).
His research spans a broad range of topics in physics. In the field of solid-state physics, he explores electromagnetic phenomena at the nanoscale, such as the quantum confinement of excitons in low-dimensional materials, localized surface plasmon resonance, magnetic exchange anisotropy, spin glasses, spin-flop transitions, and spin waves. His work also focuses on the design, synthesis, and analysis of low-dimensional materials with applications in environmental remediation, transducer and sensor technologies, sustainable energy sources, spintronics, collective quantum states in solid state, topologycal materials, smart materials and nanomedicine. Additionally, he investigates topics in general relativity and quantum gravitation, focusing on the study of black holes, gravitoelectromagnetism and gravitational entropy.
