Adán Guillermo Jordán-Garza, Ph.D., is a marine biologist and coral reef ecologist at the Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico, whose research focuses on coral reef ecology, marine biodiversity, coral diseases, and the environmental drivers of reef condition. He earned his B.Sc. in Biology from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), followed by an M.Sc. in Marine Sciences and Limnology from UNAM's Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology, and a Ph.D. from the Florida Institute of Technology. He is currently recognized as a Level I researcher in Mexico's Sistema Nacional de Investigadoras e Investigadores (SNII) and holds the PRODEP desirable academic profile.

His research spans local to global scales, with particular emphasis on the ecology and health of coral reefs in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. His work has addressed the relationship between thermal stress and coral disease, disease transmission, coral lesion recovery, coral-associated microorganisms, reef community structure, and methodological approaches for estimating coral disease prevalence. He has contributed to international collaborative research examining global patterns of coral disease and their relationship with sea-temperature anomalies and local environmental conditions.

Among his contributions to coral disease ecology is the development and evaluation of sampling approaches for estimating disease prevalence in reef-building corals, including work demonstrating how sampling design can substantially influence prevalence estimates and statistical power. His research has appeared in journals including Ecology, Coral Reefs, PLOS ONE, PeerJ, The ISME Journal, and Continental Shelf Research. More recently, his research has expanded to broader coastal ecosystem processes, including the relationship between environmental disturbance, soil properties, and mangrove forest structure in northern Veracruz.

At Universidad Veracruzana, Jordán-Garza combines research with graduate and undergraduate education and the training of new marine scientists. The university reports that he has supervised more than 17 undergraduate and four graduate theses and has led projects supported by or associated with CONACYT, PRODEP, CONABIO, and CONANP. His current activities include research and student training in the Lobos-Tuxpan Reef System, including studies of coral bleaching, disease, reef ecology, restoration, and the reconstruction of historical thermal stress using coral skeletal records.

Through this combination of ecological research, quantitative approaches, long-term reef monitoring, and student training, his work seeks to understand how climate change and local environmental pressures are reshaping coral reefs and other coastal ecosystems in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
