Senior researcher at CICIMAR-IPN since1991. Graduated from the Marine Biology career at the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, Mexico (1985-1990), Master Science degree in Marine Ecology from the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine Sciences of the National Polytechnic Institute. (1990-1992) and Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from the College of Earth, Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (Oregon State University) (1998-2003). He did a sabbatical stay with Dr. Stephen Nicol and Dr. So Kawaguchi at the Australian Antarctic Division at Hobart, Australia (2008-2009). He is currently member on the editorial board of the international journals Journal Plankton Research (since 2012) and Marine Ecology Progress Series (since 2013) and the institutional journal CICIMAR-Oceánides since 2004 (ratified Mar 2026). In taxonomy he has described 3 genera with their respective species, 4 new species plus the description of the larvae of 4 nominal species and proposed the synonymy of 4 species. Dr. Jaime Gómez-Gutiérrez is specialized pelagic ecology focused on zooplankton ecology and climatic change. He is interested in studies of plankton community structure through time series, secondary productivity, biomass, symbiosis behavior, parasite-host ecology and predator-prey interactions of animals in the epipelagic marine ecosystem. He has collaborated with researchers from diverse disciplines, including hydroacoustic studies, parasitology, microbiology, physiology, carcinology, and ecology of marine mammals to understand the biological interactions between organisms ranging from bacteria to blue whales. Since 1992 he has been studying the biology and ecology of the crustaceans of the Order Euphausiacea (krill) in every possible perspective (embryology, vital rates, ecology, secondary productivity), because krill are part of relevant trophic relationships in the marine food web. Currently interested in zooplankton of insular islands in Mexican Pacific, decadal changes in zooplankton in function of climatic changes and conservation of small-scale marine habitats.
