GALAR MARTINEZ, MARCELA

Marcela Galar Martínez is an Industrial Pharmaceutical Chemist with a Master's degree in Toxicology and a PhD in Chemobiological Sciences from the IPN. She is a professor and researcher at the ENCB, IPN, where she directs the Aquatic Toxicology Laboratory. She belongs to the SNII of CONAHCyT (level 2). Her area of expertise is Aquatic Toxicology and her line of research is the evaluation of the ecotoxicological risk of metals and emerging contaminants on fish. He has directed more than 25 research projects and published 106 articles indexed in the JCR. To date, he has supervised 48 bachelor's, 27 master's and 11 doctoral theses. She is a member of the Aquatic Ecosystem Health & Management Society, where she is Coordinator of the Latin American Chapter and collaborates in the Editorial Board, as well as the Mesoamerican Association of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Chemistry, where she is currently vice-president. She teaches Environmental Toxicology at the graduate level and Aquatic Toxicology to undergraduates. She was Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Chemobiological Sciences at IPN from 2018 to 2021, obtaining the status of International Program during her management.
She is a scientific advisor and representative of educational institutions in the Madin Dam Basin Commission since its formation (2009), participating in reforestation and cleanup campaigns, giving talks and webinars, as well as environmental education workshops, in order to generate ecological awareness in the communities of the basin. Currently, in synergy with the IPN, UAEMex, UV and CCPM, he is leading a FORDECyT/PRONACES 6656 project, which aims to deepen the knowledge of the impact of contaminants in Cutzamala and Madin System dams, using fish behavior as a biomarker, develop ecotechnologies that allow the specific removal of these contaminants and environmental education workshops for adults, children and decision makers as a strategy for the dissemination of science.
