PhD in Engineering and Science from Tecnologico de Monterrey, México; Master in Design, Technology and Education from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, and Industrial Designer from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. In 2023, she completed a research stay at the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen), Germany, in the Laboratory of Machines and Tools and in 2022 at the Department of Product Design in the School of Engineering at the University of Leeds, UK. She also collaborated as visiting researcher at Open Learning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2025.
Assistant Professor of the Department of Design at Tecnologico de Monterrey - Campus Ciudad de México, since 2014, and director of the Bachelor's Degree program in Industrial Design from 2015 to 2018. Professor researcher at the Institute for the Future of Education, in the Educational Technology Research Unit. Founding member of the Interuniversity Design Workshop in Mexico City and peer evaluator of the Mexican Council for the Evaluation of Design Programs (COMAPROD). She has served on the jury of the Mexican Design Biennial, the National Design Award and the World Design Organization's Design Spotlight, among others. Member of the Board of Directors of Open Education Global (2026-2029).
Dr. Avarez-Icaza has published and presented papers in national and international platforms in the field of education and design. She has also developed since 2002, several projects on accessibility and universal design, both for the public and private sectors. Her areas of research are Design Methodologies, Design for Social Justice, Transition Design and Inclusive Design. She is a member of international research networks, such as International Society of Learning Sciences, and the Knowledge Equity Network of the University of Leeds. Also, member of the Mexican Council of Educational Innovation (COMIE).
