BAYUELO JIMENEZ, JEANNETTE SOFIA

Bayuelo's laboratory studies the physiological and ecological basis of plant adaptation to low soil fertility in the Central Mexican highlands. This includes examining root traits that can be used to breed crops — including crops such as common bean and maize —to better acquire and use the critical resources necessary for healthy growth.

I began my career at Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo as Full Professor in 2002. Since then, I has advised master's students and undergraduate scholars, as well as eleven visiting researchers and scholars. This lab is home to several undergraduate research projects, and I teach an intensive undergraduate and graduate course in plant nutrition and soil fertility each year.

I have received honors over the course of my career — notably, the National Researchers System (SNI) Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research, a distinguished professorship from the Michoacan Academy of Sciences, an IAEA fellowship at Universidad de Sao Paolo, Brasil, an Award for Excellence in Graduate Degree Program in Biological Sciences, Postgraduate Studies Scholarships from the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT), and two graduate fellowships from the Pennsylvania State University.

Prior to arriving at UMSNH, I held positions as associate research member at the Colegio de Posgraduados in Mexico. I earned doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania, PA, USA in Horticulture, a master's from Colegio de Posgraduados, Mexico in Agricultural Botany and a bachelor's degree from the University Metropolitana at Mexico City in Biology.

The title of Full Professor recognizes the academic contributions of current, full-time faculty members who hold the rank of professor. Full professors belonging to National Researchers System (SNI) at Mexico acknowledged leaders in their fields of research; demonstrate significant leadership in raising the University's standards in teaching, research and service; and exhibit excellent teaching skills.
