I am a microbiologist studying host-microbe interactions, microbial ecology, genomics, and evolution. In our research group, we explore the realms of niche specialization and speciation, particularly within Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria, examining their interactions with eukaryotic hosts. Our primary objective is to elucidate the intricate evolutionary and molecular mechanisms that govern these processes.
Previous investigations dealt mainly with symbiotic root nodule bacteria (rhizobia), where we analyzed the evolutionary, ecological, and genomic patterns influencing speciation and host specialization across various genera and species. Furthermore, our work delved into understanding the complexities of host-dependent root microbiome assembly.
Our current research efforts are directed towards unraveling the roles and contributions of mobile genetic elements, efflux pumps, resistance genes, secretion systems, and exoproteins of Stenotrophomonas. We specifically focus on their implications in antibiotic resistance, virulence, and resistance to digestion by free-living amoebae. Additionally, we are actively developing genetic tools to explore the cellular microbiology of Acanthamoeba-Stenotrophomonas interactions.
