Dr. María Fernanda Martínez García is a faculty member at the University of Sonora. She has four scientific publications, one of which will be published in May 2026, and is a candidate member of the National System of Researchers and Investigators (SNII). She is currently conducting a postdoctoral stay at the Northwestern Center for Biological Research (CIBNOR).
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Sonora (2011–2015). Her undergraduate thesis was titled “Comparative analysis of pathogens in the pleasure oyster (Crassostrea corteziensis) from two localities in the Gulf of California,” focusing on bivalve mollusks, specifically oysters.
She later completed a Master’s degree in Biosciences at the University of Sonora (2017–2019), where she obtained her degree with the research project “Presence, prevalence, and genotypic diversity of ostreid herpesvirus type 1 (OsHV-1) in Laguna La Cruz, Sonora,” centered on oyster genetics and health.
She holds a Ph.D. in Biosciences from the University of Sonora, where she developed the doctoral project “Morphological and genetic characterization of ostreids from Estero El Soldado, Sonora,” applying molecular biology and population genetics tools to evaluate genetic diversity, hybridization, and genetic introgression between native and introduced oysters.
She has taught university-level courses in General Biology, Botany, Evolution, Structure and Dynamics of the Environment, and Population Genetics. Her research lines focus on molecular biology, population genetics, evolution, and bivalve mollusks, particularly oysters, with an emphasis on hybridization processes, genetic introgression, and the conservation of genetic diversity in the coastal ecosystems of the Gulf of California.
