I have a broad background in public health entomology, focusing on improving surveillance and control systems for vector-borne diseases. As a principal investigator (PI) or co-investigator with various institutions and multiple funded grants, a key component of my current research includes designing bioassays and trials to evaluate new versus traditional entomological infestation measures and control tools for Ae. aegypti, the vector for dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and Yellow Fever viruses.
I have successfully managed projects, including staffing, research protections, and budgeting, collaborated with other researchers, and published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. As part of the activities of the Collaborative Unit for Entomological Bioassays (UCBE-UADY), recognized by the Mexican Ministry of Health as a collaborating center for evaluating insecticides, we regularly test insecticides and modes of application on mosquitoes and assess insecticide susceptibility and resistance in Ae. aegypti populations across Mexico.
We maintain strong collaborations with the Ministries of Health in various Latin American countries and esteemed international institutions. We are currently in the process of obtaining Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) accreditation for our test sites (WHO, PAHO, and IVCC) for product evaluation. UCBE recently secured funding from the Mexican Ministry of Education (CONACYT) and USAID to establish the Laboratory of Biological Control for Ae. aegypti, which includes a large-scale mosquito breeding system for developing strategies based on Wolbachia and Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) in collaboration with the Government of Yucatán and the Mexican Ministry of Health.
Currently, I am a co-PI and co-investigator for phase III trials evaluating targeted indoor residual spraying and IIT-SIT for Aedes control.
