Sandra Loera-Serna has served as a Professor-Researcher (Titular C) in the Department of Basic Sciences since 2009. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Iztapalapa Campus. Subsequently, she obtained both her Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at UNAM in 2010.
Her prolific research career is evidenced by her co-authorship of over 83 articles published in international and national scientific journals, along with a patent granted in 2019. Her work has garnered significant recognition within the scientific community, with her articles being cited more than 2115 times in other scientific works, resulting in an h-index of 19 according to Google Scholar.
She is a distinguished Level 2 member of the National System of Researchers, and she leads the consolidated academic group "Nanostructured Materials Engineering and their applications (IMNA)." Her commitment to academic mentorship is clear through her successful guidance of numerous doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students to graduation.
Beyond her research and mentorship, she is the author of 3 books and 3 book chapters. She has delivered over 35 invited lectures at various universities and research centers. Her dedication to education has been recognized with the Teaching Award from UAM-Azcapotzalco in both 2019 and 2021.
Dr. Loera-Serna has also secured funding for her research, serving as the lead researcher for two Basic Science projects sponsored by CONAHCyT (2010 and 2019). Her contributions to academic governance include serving as a member of the Resources Review Committee (2020-2021) and the Master's in Science and Engineering Committee (Materials track) (2018-2022). Currently, she is an integral part of the core faculty of that postgraduate program.
Furthermore, she has held significant leadership roles within the institution, presiding over the DCBI Editorial Committee from 2023 to 2025 and serving as the Divisional Coordinator of Academic Development for CBI. Presently, she holds the position of Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies and Research for CBI.
Her areas of research interest include designing new porous materials, adsorption, wastewater treatments, and treatment of textile dyes.
