GONZALEZ CASTILLO, OCTAVIO FRANCISCO

He holds a degree in Industrial Biochemistry Engineer and a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM), a Mexican institution where he has worked as a professor-researcher since 1986. His concern about how to incorporate social, economic, political, and environmental dimensions into the life cycle of production systems led him to begin his doctoral studies in engineering, which he completed in 2008 at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) with the thesis "Design of a planning instrument to incorporate sustainability approaches into productive systems evaluation."

By 2025, he will have completed 37 years of supporting the learning process of between 5,000 and 7,000 biotechnology students enrolled in 200 courses), during which approximately 1,000 finish projects will have been integrated. In the graduate program, he has served as a jury member for the graduation examination of 23 master's students and 4 doctoral students in the area of ​​Environmental Sustainability for the Graduate Program in Sciences and Arts for Design. He has personally served as thesis supervisor for four of them, at the master's level, and two more at the doctoral level.

In the field of continuing education, since 1988, I have collaborated as a speaker and organizer of several courses and diploma programs in which I have sought to bring together the thematic fields of project design and evaluation with environmental biotechnology and sustainability in socio-ecosystems. He has taught more than 950 hours of courses on these topics in 48 refresher programs, participated in 91 national and international conferences and events, and published approximately 50 academic works (articles, book chapters, and books).

He has participated in and coordinated various research projects. Currently (2023-2026), she is a member of the National System of Researchers (SNII) of the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation (Secihti). She has held honorary positions and received awards related to the sustainability of socioecosystems: first place in the professional category of the SERFIN Environmental Award (1992); member of the Advisory Council for Sustainable Development of the Federal Government (2005-2007); President of the Chapter on Regional Development and Sustainability Administration; Academy of Administrative Sciences A.C. 2006-2012; General Coordinator of the Institutional Plan towards Sustainability (PIHASU) of the UAM (2007-2009); member of the Council for Sustainable Urban Development of Mexico City (2008-2009).

The complexity and dynamism of sustainability phenomena in socio-ecosystems convinced him that research in this field requires ongoing training and collaborative work across disciplines. Since then, he has founded four interdisciplinary teams.
