Alberto Antonio-Campos is a researcher and academic faculty member within the Department of Parasitology at the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. His research is situated at the intersection of molecular biology and parasitology, focusing on triatomines, Trypanosoma cruzi, and mosquito vectors. In addition to vector-borne diseases, his scientific investigations extensively cover foodborne and waterborne parasites. Notably, his research on Entamoeba histolytica has been published in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CDC journal), and he actively investigates other parasites of significant food safety interest, such as Giardia lamblia.
He conducts specialized research utilizing molecular tools to analyze phylogenetic data and identify blood meal sources in mosquito vectors. His collaborative vector research includes assessing the occurrence, distribution and infection with T. cruzi of triatomines in the state of Arkansas, USA.
Methodologically, his expertise encompasses comprehensive laboratory protocols, including DNA extraction, PCR assays, and Sanger sequencing. He has specific experience in targeted genetic amplification utilizing COI and 16S rRNA markers. Beyond the laboratory bench, he actively utilizes the R programming language for data analysis, bioinformatics workflows, and generating statistical visualizations. His sequence evaluation and computational work also involve executing BLASTn alignments and constructing haplotype networks.
He works alongside departmental colleagues and co-authors in the parasitology field to advance the broader understanding of parasitic diseases, contributing valuable molecular and epidemiological insights to public health.
