BARREIRO ISABEL, EMMA JULIETA

Dr. Emma Julieta Barreiro is currently a lecturer of the B.A. in Translation at the National School of Languages, Linguistics, of the B.A. in English Literature at the Open University of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Dr. Barreiro has also been a lecturer at the Theater and Drama Department and at the Modern Languages Department of the same university where she has taught literary criticism and research methodology, English Literature and Translation courses . She got a degree in English Literature at the UNAM, a postgraduate research degree (M.Phil.) in comparative literature at the University of Edinburgh and obtained a doctorate in literature with honors at the UNAM with a comparative thesis on 17th-Century Spanish and English Literature (A Cultural Studies approach to Francisco de Quevedo´s and John Donne´s Versions of the Lamentations of Jeremiah).

Her current research includes comparative literature, cultural hermeneutics, translation studies, transcultural representations in textual and visual discourses (including travel photography), early 20th-Century, migration and exile literature, as well as poetry in the context of intellectual and publishing networking between Europe and Mexico in the same period. Moreover, Dr. Barreiro does interdisciplinary research on representations of Mexico and of Mexican, American and European women in publications by German and English-speaking travelers in the early 20th Century, including D.H. Lawrence. She has recently started research from a similar perspective in the correspondence of Alexander von Humboldt.

Her most recent academic published work includes the books La representación de un país en las publicaciones en alemán a lo largo de una época de transición, 1914-1945 [Mexiko: The representation of a country in German-language publications during an era of transition, 1914-1945] (2021) and México en el espacio germanoparlante, 1910-1945: Facetas de una representación (2024) [Mexico in the German-speaking World, 1910-1945. Facets of a Representation] edited together with Bernd Hausberger and the journal article ‘Juego de espejos: la representación de mujeres en libros de viajeros germanoparlantes en México en la década de 1920’ (2023) [A Game of Mirrors: The Representation of Women in German-speaking Travellers' Books in Mexico in the 1920s].

Dr. Emma Julieta Barreiro translates from English, French and German into Spanish non-literary and literary texts including poetry and fiction, as well as from Spanish into English. Some of her most recent German-Spanish poetry translations books are Más allá de la piel by Michael Speier (2021) and with Jean Portante Oscuro es el interior de la boca. 14 poetas de la lengua alemana de hoy (2019). She has also translated novels by Yoko Tawada, Gurjinder Basran, Andreas Steinhöfel, and other authors and is a freelance copy editor and proofreader in Spanish and English.
