Viviana Ramírez holds a PhD in Social and Policy Sciences from the University of Bath (UK), a Master of Science in Wellbeing and Development from the same institution and a Bachelor in Economics from the Universidad de las Americas Puebla (Mexico).
Currently she is Senior Associate Professor at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (Mexico) in the Dept. of International Relations and Political Sciences and a member of the National System of Researchers, level I (Mexican Council of Science and Technology, CONACYT). She is Research Fellow at the Centre of Development Studies at the University of Bath. In 2019, she was Cambridge-UDLAP Visiting Fellow at the Center for Latin American Studies, University of Cambridge; and in 2021 she was visiting researcher at the Institut des Hautes Etudes de l'Amérique Latine at the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. She has been consultant for research projects and international organizations applying a wellbeing approach in countries including Mexico, Bangladesh and India.
Her main field of expertise is the analysis of social policy, especially its implementation processes and its impacts on the well-being of its beneficiaries. She studied in depth the Mexican conditional cash transfer programme Progresa-Oportunidades-Prospera and is currently analysing the transition in Mexico towards unconditional programmes that eliminate the health component. In her research, Viviana has used mixed methodologies and the design of wellbeing and development indicators. She has presented her research in multiple international conferences and seminars.
Viviana is the author of the book titled “Relational Well-being in Policy Implementation in Mexico: The Oportunidades-Prospera Conditional Cash Transfer” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021). Other recent publications include: “Design and reflection on the metric of common good dynamics” (co-authored with Oscar Garza-Vázquez, Open Book Publishers, 2022); “Relationships in the implementation of conditional cash transfers: the provision of health in Oportunidades-Prospera” (Social Policy and Society, 2020); and “CCTs through a wellbeing lens: The importance of the relationship between frontline officers and participants in the Oportunidades/Prospera programme in Mexico” (Social Policy and Society, 2016).
