CASTILLO SANCHEZ, GUILLERMO RAUL

Biologist from the Faculty of Sciences, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). I hold a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences and a PhD in Sciences from the Institute of Ecology, UNAM. I received the Alfonso Caso Medal for academic merit for my thesis, “Local Adaptation in the Toloache–Herbivore Interaction,” and I am a Level I member of the National System of Researchers.

My research focuses on applying ecological thinking to real-world contexts, particularly plant ecophysiology and the evolutionary ecology of defensive strategies in wild and domesticated plants against herbivores. I have also applied ecological theory to the conservation of aquatic species, urban ecosystems, and commercially relevant systems such as chili pepper and wine grapes.

I have authored multiple indexed journal articles, conference papers, and books. I have served as an evaluator for SECIHTI and PRODEP funding calls, and as a reviewer for international JCR-indexed academic journals. I am also a member of the editorial board of PLOS Ecosystems and a Special Issue Editor for Horticulturae.

As a professor, my work is linked to educational innovation and contextualized learning in real-world situations. I have contributed to undergraduate training and served on academic committees for undergraduate and graduate students. I also coordinated three editions of the International Seminar From Vine to Wine, fostering collaboration among students, researchers, and agribusiness entrepreneurs.
